History of ComputersSlide Rule

To provide students with the insights necessary to understand the historical sequence of the development of the digital computer.

The students will be able to:

  1. Identify which device is considered the first calculating device.
  2. Explain that Charles Babbages Analitical engine was unique in that it was the first calculating machine that stored information and followed programs
  3. Identify IBM as the Company that made the first electric counting machine?
  4. Recognize that the development of the digital computer was impacted by the develpoment of new technologies.
  5. Identify the Vaccum Tube as the key technology that enabled the The First Generation of computers.
  6. List two problems inherant in the use of vaccum tubes in the construction of a digital computer.
  7. Identify the Transistor as the key technology that enabled the The Second Generation of computers.
  8. Identify the Integrated Circuit Chip as the key technology that enabled the The Third Generation of computers.
  9. Identify that integrated circuit chips are made from silicon.
  10. Hypothesize how computers might work 20 years from today.
  11. Explain that a timeline is used to show the relationship between events over a specific time period.
  12. Using a drawing of a rendition of a computer chip, operate the basic functions of electronic drawing software, so as to electronicly redraw what is seen on the orgiginal drawing.
